File transfer, file compression and email tracking utilities

File transfer services

Some files are so large that they cannot be sufficiently compressed to make them small enough to email. In such cases third-party file transfer services offer a handy alternative. These allow you to upload files of up to 2GB (Rapidshare) or 100MB (Yousendit) to their servers, and the intended recipient is then sent an email with a link to the uploaded files. Their basic service is free of charge.

Rapidshare

Yousendit

PeaZip

This is a file compression utility which, unlike its better-known equivalent, WinZip, is freeware. It can be useful for making a large file small enough to send by email, as well as for bundling together several files as a single archive. It exists in both Windows and Linux versions.

PeaZip

MSGTAG

This unpronounceable-looking name actually says ‘message tag’, and is a utility program that sends you a receipt which shows when an email you’ve sent has been either opened or viewed in an email program preview pane. This is an invaluable tracking tool which will enable you to have peace of mind about the fate of your emails. If you don’t receive an email receipt by the time you expect, you will know there has probably been a problem, and you can then take appropriate action.
